Virginia Online Drivers Ed Information for Home Schoolers

If you are an approved home schooler in Virginia, drivers ed can be taught at home. Students must currently be enrolled in a home-schooled program approved by the school division superintendent. You may sign up now through National Driver Training if your are homeschooled.

 

Classroom Component - Students can complete the classroom portion of the course at an approved driver training school, a public or private school, or through an approved correspondence course, like National Driver Training. NDT partners with many driving schools throughout the state. If you are not homeschooled, you must sign up through one of our partnered driving schools.

 

Driver License and Permit Requirements

 

  • The minimum age for obtaining a Virginia driver's license is 16 years and 3 months. To obtain a Virginia learner's permit you must be a least 15 years and 6 months.
  • If you are from out-of-state and possess a valid driver's license, the DMV can exchange your out-of-state driver's license for a VA Driver's license if you meet the identity, legal presence, and social security requirements and National Driver Training's Virginia Teen Online Driver's Ed program requirements.
  • If you are age 18 or older and you have never held a license by any state, you must hold a learner's permit for a minimum of 60 days or show completion of National Driver Training's Virginia Teen Online Driver's Ed program while holding the permit.
  • If you are under 18, you must provide proof of successful completion of state approved driver's ed and hold a learner's permit at least nine months before you can receive a driver's license. NDT's certificate of completion is considered part of the driver's license application. Your parent, guardian or foster parent must list his or her driver's license or identification card number and sign the certificate to certify that you have driven the required 45 hours, with 15 hours at night. Certifying false statements can result in prosecution.
  • If you had previously been found not innocent of any offense by a juvenile and domestic relations court in Virginia or any other state, you must obtain approval to be licensed from that court or a court in the city or county where you live.


    About Our Course

  • This is a self-paced, online course. You will learn on your schedule. Start and stop lessons at any time and pick up from where you left off.
  • This course includes 30 hours of classroom instruction plus the required 90-minute Parent/Teen section.
  • In accordance with State Law, you must complete the entire 30 hours of education before a certificate of completion will be issued.
  • Parents must receive approval for home instruction BEFORE students can begin their course.
  • Since we've included the required 90-Minute Parent/Student Component for you, simply complete the course sections, take your final exam, and you'll find documentation of its completion on your certificate.
  • Final exams are completed online with a secured login and connection. Students must pass the exam with a passing grade of 80% or higher before receiving their certificate of completion.
