Parent Taught - National Driver Training's Parent Taught Driver's Ed Course (PTDE) #102 was the first TDLR approved course in the state. This online course offering can be completed via desktop, tablet, or phone using NDT's app available on the IOS or Android platform. This drivers ed course will walk the student through 7 levels with a comprehension quiz at the end of each level. An audio read-along feature is also available. This course also includes the ONLY in-car instruction manual to guide parents through the behind-the-wheel experience. This manual will guide parents through an identical step-by-step lesson plan that is used by NDT's certified professional instructors. National Driver Training's Texas Drivers Ed program uses a systematic approach and grading tools to help ease the frustrations that often come when learning how to get on the road for the first time.
Instructor Led - NDT's Instructor Led course is designed for those that do not meet the standards for teaching their teen to drive or want to have a professional instructor guide your teen through the 7 hours of in-car training and 7 hours of observation. With this program, the remaining 30 hours of behind the wheel can be done with a licensed adult, 25 or older.
In Texas, to receive your learner's permit, you must be at least 15 years old and have started your Online Drivers Ed. Students can easily get their certificate through our Parent taught and Instructor Led courses in a similar fashion. In either case, students can finish their first 6-hours of training and take the official permit exam online through National Driver Training's online self-paced course. After completion of the course, teens can download their official certificate right away. This certificate proves completion of the first six hours and a successfully passed written exam. The final certificate includes the DE964E and a unique identifier (certificate number) for the student showing that the new driver has passed the official DPS written exam.
When the student has completed the first 6-hours and passed the written exam (for both Parent Taught and Instructor Led), they are eligible to apply for their Texas learner's permit (Must be at least 15 years old).
Once these requirements have been met, the permit applicant should make an appointment at their local Department of Public Safety facility to apply for the Texas Learner's permit. A parent or legal guardian must be present when showing up in person. Make sure to bring the following:
- Certificate of completion from National Driver Training (DE964E)
- Proof of Identification
- Proof of Social Security Number
- Proof of US Citizenship
- Proof of Texas Residency
- Verification of Enrollment (VOE) to verify high school enrollment (or diploma/GED)
When the student has obtained their learner's permit, they may begin their behind-the-wheel training with a qualified parent or professional instructor. When the student has passed the remaining Texas Online Driver's Ed requirements, they may apply for a provisional driver's license.
