How Long Must a Colorado Teen Hold a Permit?

Getting a Colorado learner permit is only the first milestone. Learn how long a teenager must keep the permit, what supervised practice counts toward a license, and what happens if the student turns 18 before the holding period ends.

Quick answer: Colorado drivers younger than 18 must hold a learner permit for at least 12 full months before taking the driving skills test and applying for a minor driver license. They must also log 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 nighttime hours. If the driver turns 18 before 12 months have passed, the minimum minor permit holding period no longer applies. The clock starts when the permit is issued, not when driver's education is completed.

When does the 12-month Colorado permit period begin?

The holding period begins on the date the state issues the student's learner permit. It is not counted from the date the student registers for a 30-hour course, finishes driver education, passes the written knowledge test, or begins practicing in a family vehicle.

For example, a student who receives a permit on June 15 generally cannot take the driving skills test for a minor license before June 15 of the following year, even if that student has completed all 50 practice hours. The teen must also be at least 16 years old and meet the other licensing requirements.

Six steps from a Colorado teen learner permit to a driver license

  1. Complete the applicable education before getting the permit. Colorado's rules depend on when the permit is issued. Starting January 1, 2027, new applicants ages 15–17 must complete an approved 30-hour driver education course. Students with permits issued earlier are not newly subject to that requirement solely because the law changes.
  2. Get the learner permit from Colorado DMV. Passing a knowledge test and meeting the required application and identification steps come before supervised practice under the permit.
  3. Record the permit issue date. For applicants who are still under 18, plan for a full 12-month holding period before a driving test or minor license.
  4. Practice with a qualified adult supervisor. The supervisor must be at least 21, properly licensed, and seated in the front passenger seat. A learner permit does not allow solo driving.
  5. Complete and record required practice. Before getting a minor license, log at least 50 supervised driving hours, including 10 at night. Teens applying for a license before age 16½ also generally need six hours of instruction from an approved driving school, subject to applicable exceptions.
  6. Apply for the license when eligible. After the minimum holding period and other requirements are met, schedule the driving skills test with an approved third-party testing provider and follow DMV instructions for upgrading the permit.

How many driving practice hours are required?

Colorado supervised practice checklist for drivers under 18
  • 50 total hours: Minimum supervised driving time.
  • 10 hours at night: These nighttime hours count within the 50-hour total, not in addition to it.
  • Signed driving log: Use Colorado's Drive Time Log Sheet (DR 2324) or an accepted log method and obtain the required adult signature.
  • Professional behind-the-wheel instruction: Generally six hours if the driver will obtain a license before age 16½; ask DMV about applicable exceptions.

Families should distribute practice across different road conditions and driving situations, not rush through the hours. The purpose of the learner period is supervised experience, and completing the hours early does not shorten the 12-month requirement.

What happens if a teen turns 18 before holding a permit for a full year?

The minor 12-month minimum stops applying at age 18. Colorado DMV says an applicant who turns 18 may take the driving skills test and apply for a license without waiting out the rest of the year. The DMV also states the minor 50-hour driving log is not required once the applicant is 18. The applicant must still satisfy applicable adult licensing and testing requirements.

For a 17-year-old close to turning 18, this may change the timing of the driving test. It does not authorize driving independently before the student has a full license.

Does the January 1, 2027 Colorado law change the permit wait?

No. Starting January 1, 2027, Colorado expands the requirement to take a state-approved 30-hour driver education course before a new learner permit is issued to applicants ages 15–17. The law does not shorten the 12-month permit holding period for minors or eliminate supervised driving hours.

The course can prepare students for the permit process; supervised driving and the 12-month minor permit holding period are separate requirements.

Frequently asked questions about Colorado teen learner permits

Can a Colorado teen get a driver license before holding a permit for 12 months?

No. While the applicant is younger than 18, Colorado requires at least 12 full months with a learner permit before the driving skills test and minor driver license. A person who turns 18 is no longer subject to that minimum holding period.

Does the Colorado permit holding period begin when the course is finished?

No. The 12-month clock begins on the date Colorado issues the learner permit, not the date a student enrolls in driver education, finishes coursework, or takes the written test.

How many supervised driving hours are required for a Colorado minor?

A Colorado permit holder who applies for a license while under 18 must document at least 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night, on the required signed driving log.

Can a Colorado teen drive alone with a learner permit?

No. Colorado learner-permit driving requires a licensed supervisor age 21 or older in the front passenger seat who meets the state licensing requirements.

What if a Colorado student turns 18 before the 12 months are up?

After turning 18, the driver may proceed with the driving skills test and license application without waiting for the remainder of the 12-month minor permit period. The DMV also says the minor supervised driving log is no longer required in this situation.

Does the January 1, 2027 driver education change shorten the permit holding period?

No. Colorado’s new 30-hour education requirement for new permit applicants ages 15–17 does not eliminate the existing 12-month permit holding period for applicants seeking a license before age 18.
